Water connects us all. From the ice lined ridge at the top of Mount Borah, to the roaring rapids lining the bottom of Hells Canyon - water is the most important resource we have.

As many Tribes and other cultures say, “water is life.” Not in only a biological sense, but to a life worth living. Here in Idaho, water is what shapes our heritage. Our proud traditions of farming, fishing, rafting – water courses through it all.

Within the borders of Idaho, rivers are carving out magnificent features throughout its landscape, depositing nutrient rich soils for farmers in its floodplains, and providing not only a drinking source, but a habitat for many of our species, including our beloved salmon.

As our rivers continue to flow towards the ocean, they are affected by other factors, they pick up pollutants from industrial and agricultural runoff degrading its water quality, its flow is altered by dams and river diversions affecting its natural ecosystems, and a decreasing number of salmon are returning home to spawn.

We have a lot to lose with our rivers continually being threatened, but together we can help protect and restore the rivers we love. Idaho Rivers United's vision is an Idaho with clean, free flowing rivers that support the communities, people, fish and wildlife that depend on them, and citizens motivated to protect their rivers for future generations.

IRU is dedicated to making a change to protect Idaho’s waterways through education, advocacy, and stewardship. Our work is only possible with your support. Help protect and restore the Idaho rivers you love on World Water Day by becoming an IRU member. For more information how you can make a difference and be part of the global effort, go to https://www.unwater.org/bethechange/ and thanks for protecting the planet!
