Calling all Idaho river guides!

Are you an Idaho river guide? Do you love talking about wild salmon and our Wild and Scenic Rivers?

If your answers are yes, then we encourage you to join your fellow guides and enroll in our Wild and Scenic Stewardship Guide Certification Program!

This unique program includes an online course, created by IRU’s 2021 River Fellow and Middle Fork Salmon guide Tess McEnroe, to provide you the tools and resources you need to share important information with your guests regarding wild salmon and steelhead recovery, the importance of Idaho’s rivers in preventing extinction, and the history and significance of Wild and Scenic River designation.

In 2021, we had an amazing cohort of guides (and other passionate river users) complete the online course, and create Action Projects related to the course theme of wild salmon recovery and Wild and Scenic Rivers. To fully complete the certification program, participants have to complete both the online learning program, and submit an Action Project that fits the stewardship theme of the course. These action projects range from artwork, letters to decision makers, visual aids for interpretive talks, etc. We were thrilled to get over 40 amazing action projects submitted by course participants, which are now hosted in a virtual library on IRU’s website, and are shared by these guides as they bring their guests downriver.

Here are the basics to become a Wild and Scenic Stewardship Guide:

  • Enroll in the course on IRU’s website

  • Complete the online course and submit and Action Project by June 1, 2022

  • Then, receive your kit of educational materials and IRU swag to bring on the river with you this summer!

We hope that you take advantage of this professional development opportunity to provide enhanced experiences for guests on commercial river trips, and to inspire stewardship of Idaho’s iconic river corridors and wild fish.
