Celebrating Earth Month 2019 with Aveda
In recent years, the cosmetology industry has been criticized for the use of products on animals, huge amounts of plastic waste, and an oversized ecological and water footprint. But a familiar name in the industry stands out as the exception. Aveda, started in Minneapolis in 1978 by an Austrian immigrant, presents in an idyllic form of the type of company we sorely need more of.
To understand why, one only needs to read their mission statement: “Our mission at Aveda is to care for the world we live in, from the products we make to the ways in which we give back to society. At Aveda, we strive to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility, not just in the world of beauty, but around the world.”
Aveda acknowledges the need for clean water beyond a facial or to rinse off conditioner. Operating under the belief that “clean water is a right for everyone, not a privilege,” Earth Month in April is Aveda’s largest environmental effort, with a goal of raising money to help provide access to clean water both domestically and internationally. Through fundraising and partnering with major international and local nonprofit organizations, Aveda is credited with raising over $60 million dollars through their Earth Month program between 1999 and November 2018.
This is where Idaho Rivers United comes in. Idaho Rivers United is lucky enough to be one of the beneficiaries of Aveda salon efforts in Boise, Twin Falls, Hailey, Pocatello and Idaho Falls. This has been a growing partnership for the last six years and has generated over $150,000 of funding going toward clean water projects and water protection programs in Idaho.
More information about Aveda--including their recyclable bottles, a campaign to support women abroad, and 100% wind-powered facilities-- as well as ways to support their mission can be found at http://www.aveda.com. Throughout Earth Month, look for posts on our website and across social media for ways you can help keep Idaho’s rivers clean by supporting Aveda.
