Idaho's wild salmon and steelhead need your voice! Help put Idaho's wild salmon and steelhead on the road to recovery.
New Mine Threatens South Fork Clearwater--salmon and steelhead habitat
The Buffalo Gulch Mining Project would involve open-pit mining of approximately 5 million tons of ore and about 7.5 million tons of overburden from a single pit. The ore would be heaped on a lined pad and doused with a cyanide solution to recover the gold. 900,000 tons of ore would be moved annually using front-end loaders and haul trucks with occasional use of explosives. Mining would occur from June 2009 through May 2013. The Project is located on a ridge between Maurice Creek and Buffalo Creek drainages about 2.5 miles northwest of Elk City.
The Forest Service is accepting scoping comments on this proposal through June, 2008. Use the points below to craft and send in your email comments to the Bureau of Land Management, and help protect the South Fork of the Clearwater River!
- Open pit cyanide heap leach mines have a well-established history of toxic spills and unanticipated long-term water quality problems.
- Low concentrations of cyanide can kill aquatic life.
- Cyanide heap leach mining is banned in Montana because it's unsafe.
- Open pit cyanide heap leach mining requires the transportation of large amounts of many chemical including cyanide, ammonium nitrate, sulfuric acid, caustic soda. and diesel fuel.
- A spill or release at the mine site or during transportation could contaminate the South Fork Clearwater River.
- Please require a full EIS when considering the permit for this application. Thank you.
