Guide Education Program
One of the various ways through which Idaho Rivers United spreads awareness about Idaho's wild salmon across the state is through our Guide Education Program. River guides can be extremely effective voices for salmon and steelhead by educating their guests about the precarious situation of Idaho's irreplaceable wild salmon.

Idaho has thousands of licensed river guides who reach tens of thousands of people each year. Through our Guide Education Program, we give guides and outfitters the necessary tools and education to become effective salmon teachers. River guides play a crucial role. They help to educate and inspire their guests while on the river, but they also help us connect with their guests after their trip is over so that they can continue to be advocates for salmon.

Building a web of salmon advocacy
In the past, the Guide Education Program has consisted of IRU representatives teaching river guides throughout Idaho how to best communicate the issues surrounding salmon and steelhead in the state to their guests. The program has been widely successful. River guests from around the country have signed over 5,000 letters to Congressional Representatives, and have met directly with Congressional Representatives. Through this program, river guides have helped us establish a web of dedicated and active salmon and steelhead advocates across the nation that continues to grow.

Educating river guides across Idaho
This summer, Idaho Rivers United's Guide Education Coordinator is traveling the state to give presentations on salmon and steelhead education to hundreds of Idaho river guides. IRU provides them with the tools and resources they need to educate their guests about Idaho's salmon crisis and encourage them to take action. These tools include educational waterproof flip cards, laminated maps and photos and various "take action" items that give guests a voice in the salmon recovery campaign.

Our ultimate goal is to build a strong community of well-informed river guides who will educate and inspire the thousands of guests who travel Idaho's rivers each year to take action for the urgent needs of salmon and steelhead.
